 HEALTH TIP

Oral Health Can Mean More Than a Pretty Smile!

Previous studies have shown a definite association between oral health and systemic health.  Associations have been shown to exist between such things as heart attacks, strokes, diabetes, esophageal cancer, and high blood pressure.  Tooth loss occurs primarily from periodontal disease and untreated dental caries which result from the accumulation of bacteria on the teeth and between the gingiva and teeth.  A recent study at Tulane and Harvard Universities involved a large number of adults ages 45-69 with no previous history of cardiovascular disease. The study revealed that the recent loss of two or more teeth due to periodontal disease or dental caries is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease.

Bottom Line – Poor oral health is associated with systemic health.  An annual or semiannual dental appointment should be a part of your annual medical exam. American Heart Association 29 March 2018
